Details
Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since. Not only was he a guitarist of legendary skill and showmanship, he also was a gifted songwriter, singer, and master of a gamut of blues, R&B, and rock styles.
As if all this weren't enough, Hendrix is also credited with being the most important innovator of sonic possibilities from the eclectic guitar. The unique use of feedback and other effects, like his signature wah-wah pedal, helped him create an unsurpassed distinctive and expressive sound. He is without question the most influential artist in the history of rock guitar.
Due to an early death, Hendrix would only record three fully conceived studio albums in his lifetime. Released in 1967, 'Are You Experienced?' was an astonishing debut, particularly from a young R&B veteran who had rarely sung, and apparently never written his own material before.
What caught most people's attention at first was his virtuosic guitar playing, but Hendrix was also a first-rate songwriter, melding cosmic imagery with some surprisingly pop-savvy hooks and tender sentiments.
'Axis: Bold as Love' and the double-LP 'Electric Ladyland' were more experimental, but all three albums contained an astonishing number of great songs, and of course, incredible guitar playing.
